In this day and age, the options for a wedding photographer are bountiful and it may be overwhelming navigating how to figure out which one to choose. However, with these few areas to consider, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect fit for you!
ONE // Editing Style
Now, the editing style may not be the MOST important quality to consider, but it is definitely something that will first get you to reach out to a photographer. Before you start scrolling through the endless amounts of #Charlotteweddingphotographers or #adventurousweddingphotographers on Instagram, take a moment to consider what flavor is your favorite.
Do you like vibrant, true to color images or trendy edits? Do you prefer more of a storytelling type photographer rather than one that is more traditional in style? Once you figure that out, that will help you start to decide which photographers you’d like to reach out to!
TWO // Price
Listen, we all have a budget and I am 100% ON BOARD with staying within that budget. A wedding does NOT have to break the bank. So it is understandable that you prefer to reach out to photographers that are in your price range. However, I will say that from experience, the more expensive photographers tend to have significantly more experience, and skimping on quality wedding photography isn’t the best choice. In the long-term, when you choose photos that will last a lifetime over other expensive aspects of a wedding, you may be a happier camper!
THREE // Legal, Insured and Solid Contracts
Are there photographers out there that are less expensive and very talented? Yep. But often times in our currently saturated market they are photographers that have not registered with the government and are not insured. And if they don’t have a solid contract that protects you and them, DO. NOT. HIRE. THEM. You’re putting yourself at risk, and quite frankly, it’s not cool when people do illegal nonsense like that. (Okay, rant over.)
FOUR // Personality
We don’t always mesh well with every single person we meet. It’s just not possible. We all have different personality types (check out the Enneagram, it’s my fave!), and some click better together than others. That’s why it is so important to meet with your potential photographer prior to hiring them. (Or at least FaceTime or have a chat on the phone.) When you meet, you can get the best vibe of how they will operate during one of the biggest days of your lives!
Are you goofy? Are you quiet? Are you nervous about being in front of a camera? Your photographer should be able to help bring out the best of you when you work together, so make sure you are comfortable with them. You’ll be spending a significant amount of intimate time together!
FIVE // Communication
Did a photographer you reached out to take several DAYS to respond to your inquiry? That may be a sign that they will not have great communication leading up to your wedding. Granted, there are unforeseen circumstances that may have delayed them (a death in the family, your email being sent to spam, being out of the country for work, etc.). But if none of those are the case, be wary. Your photographer should be sending you information about their packages, they should be open with their pricing and they should make sure they are prepared to answer whatever questions you may have when you meet (or at least be willing to get back to you if they don’t have a for sure answer at the time of meeting).
They should also thoroughly share how they photograph a wedding so that you can tell whether or not you’ll be a good fit for one another. (I’m personally ALL about wedding day planning sheets to make a wedding day as seamless as possible!) If you’re unsure if they’ll be able to capture your wedding well (chance for low lighting or direct sunlight), ask them to see a few wedding galleries with these conditions! It’ll ease your mind and make sure you’re getting quality photos no matter the lighting. Oh, and make sure they have a good system for backing up the original photos! (I store on 2-3 external hard drives until the final product is delivered!)
When it comes down to it, you will just know when the photographer is right for you, but hopefully these five tips will help you feel less overwhelmed and filled with excitement as you search for the perfect one!
